Beginners Guide to Self Tanner

Ever wonder how to get started tanning for the summer? This is a beginners guide to sunless self tanning.

First step, exfoliate! You have to remove all of the dead skin cells on your skin or else your tan will go on splotchy and patchy! You can use an at home exfoliator by mixing cinnamon and honey. Or you can spend money on a grainy exfoliator.

Next step is to decide on which route you want to go, there’s gradual moisturizers, 1 day tanners, or 2-3 week tanners. Depends on how long you want your tan to last. I use all of them to get a deep tan. I apply gradual tan moisturizers daily every morning to keep my tan going. Every other week I apply the 2-3 week tanner. If I have a event or party I tan the night before as well.

Finally, to keep your tan going you have to moisturize your skin and keep it supple. Also every time you use the 2-3 week tanner you have to exfoliate your skin. This will remove some of the previous tan but not all of it. You must exfoliate every time you use a tanner. I use a body butter every night to keep my skin supple.

Here are a few tried and true tips to tan better:

Tip #1: wear gloves to tan, you never want to have dark hands, even if you think you’ll wash your hands right after they will still get stained. If you stained your hands, there are a few remedies to get rid of the stains. I mention some on my video reviewing the Vita Liberata tan.

Tip #2: avoid dark areas like your elbows, knees, and ankles. Also, your under arms like your arm pits, that will get darker and we don’t want that.

Tip #3: don’t take a shower right after, cause you’ll just wash your tan off. Seems counter-productive.

Tip #4: avoid any light colored clothing. I always tan at night after my shower. The color develops all night and even for a few days after.

Tip #5: shave right after exfoliating. You want to remove any hair before you tan, if not the product will stick to any areas where there is hair and make it patchy.

Tip #6: don’t use any body tanning products on your face. You’ll have a lighter face but that’s totally ok, you can always use bronzer or a darker foundation.

Tip #7: When tanning use gloves or a mitt to get an even tan. Use circular motions and distribute the same amount of product evenly to your body. Try to move in fast strokes.

Those are just a few of my tips to tan! If you have any let me know!

Ana Maggie
